Geometric Wall Art

I created this wall art back in. . . June?  Maybe even May!  But after hanging it I decided to change the fabric to something more simple.  And then I had such bad morning sickness that was not going to happen.  And then I found out I was having a boy, so I would rather change the fabric to match the new boy's nursery I have brewing in my mind.  And then. . . just kidding.  That's the end of it.  So many excuses!

But in the mean time, I thought I would share.  I haven't had time for any new projects since I started nannying and it gets old sharing inspiration pics all the time!  I want to share my own work!

I found these placemats at IKEA and wouldn't you know they were almost exactly the same color aqua as Olivia's bedding?  Isn't it funny how you notice the colors you're currently working with?  I covered some cork pan holder things (actual name anyone?  I mean, not the name in Swedish because that's what IKEA gives me) with fabric that played off the aquas, creams and circle concept.   I laid everything on the ground and moved it around until I liked the layout.  Then took a picture so I could recreate it on Olivia's wall.

When I took these pics Olivia's crib was being used for a photo shoot for Oilo.  That's why there isn't a full wall picture.  Sorry!

Do you agree that the fabric is too busy?  Now that I know I'm having a boy and that I want to do an orange and aqua nursery I'm just going to wait and change it to fit the new color scheme.

Ideas for Mom's Room

My mom agreed to let me re-design her room this summer, but on her last visit to Salt Lake, she expressed some concerns.  My mom and I have very different styles, and she needs her spaces to feel personalized, unlike me. I like very geometric patterns and modern designs.  She told me she doesn't want any art work that isn't meaningful.  She used to have a whole wall of her room dedicated to our school art work!  My dad hated it, but I think if I could format it right, I could create something along those lines that both my parents would love.  Gallery wall, anyone?  So here are some ideas to sell my parents on the idea:

I love the pops of yellow in this design.  My mom's room is going to be light blue and white, so I wonder what color I could pop in there that she wouldn't object to!

I love the stripes behind this collection.  I would really love to do some light blue and white stripes behind the gallery collection in my mom's room.

Of all the gallery walls I'm posting, this one feels the most personal to me.  Do you think its the variety of styles being shown?  It feels like its taken years to collect these pieces.

And then if I have time, I want to do something like this down my mom's stair case.  Seriously, the woman cannot get enough picture frames in her life, so I'm thinking gallery walls are the way to go for her!

Another one of my mom's loves is thrift store shopping, so I'm going to start collecting frames that I find there and probably spray paint them all to match the room and let her fill them with whatever she wants!  That will keep her busy while I'm painting her head board hot pink!  (Totally kidding, mom, totally kidding.)

Some prints that I just have to have

I found these on decor8 and I just fell in love.  I want need this one for Olivia's nursery.  I think it will play nicely on the aqua and brown scheme I have chosen for the space.

What to Frame?

I once liked this guy who worked at IKEA.  On his last day I "just so happened" to need some new frames.  I bought two, but later went back and bought a third.  Most decorations are better in threes.  I planned to hang them in my bathroom in a vertical line.  There was only one problem: What to put in them!  I had a black and white bathroom (still do) and my frames were black.  I looked for a long time for some black and white prints, but the frames were square and square prints are hard to come by.  One day when I had some free time I decided it was time to get something in them and get them on the wall.  So I just went to JoAnn and picked out some scrapbook paper.  What do you think?

Plain black with a snake skin texture.

This frame seems to have a little steam damage.  That's the hazard with bathroom decor.

They used to be displayed in a vertical line, but in this apartment the best configuration is in a horizontal line.

I wonder if the guy I went to IKEA to see that day ever thought he would have those picture frames in his own bathroom someday?  :)  Probably not.

Here are some other non-traditional materials you can frame:
  • Fabric
  • Newsprint (imagine a shape, like heart, out of newsprint backed with white or black paper.  I'm going to have to remember that one for later!) (update: Today when I was talking about this idea with my design class, a student pointed out that newsprint will yellow over time.  I'll be honest, I kind of think that's cool, but if you're not down, you could always use pages from an old dictionary.  They should be treated to keep their color a little better.)
  • Wrapping paper
  • Postcards

Can you think of anything else fun to frame?

Easy Fabric Art

(I apologize for the lack of picture to illustrate the steps of this project, I did it a long time ago and didn't have the foresight to document it!)

My bedroom colors are white, gray and a hint of light pink (so far the only actual pink is from my super awesome pillow)

Anyway, when one is presented with a large white wall and a limited budget, its time to get creative!

IKEA used to carry these awesome wood frames, which I have yet to find again, but no worries! I found canvas stretcher bars at Hobby Lobby and I'm sure other art stores carry them as well. The upside of these stretcher bars is more flexibility for size and shape, as you buy each side individually and they are very easy to assemble. But the frames I bought from IKEA were about 20" x 20", which was a bit small for my space so I bought four to group together. (If you had a longer space, say above a couch, three in a row would be really rad.)

Then you select a fabric to wrap around the frames. Its best to chose a print that is large to fit the scale of the space. I decided to chose a gray fabric with a large white flower for three of the frames and a white with small gray flowers for the fourth (even though this is a small print, the flowers are grouped together read like a larger print).

When wrapping the frames in fabric its important to work with all four sides at once, from the inside out. I used a hammer and nails but when my students did this project, they used a staple gun, which they preferred. Begin by stapling the center of the top of your fabric to the center of the top of your frame. Second staple the center of the bottom of your fabric to the center of the bottom of the frame, pulling very tight. Repeat on the right and left sides. Then continue to staple, moving out from the center and pulling tight as you rotate between stapling all four sides. IKEA totally gets how a picture is worth a thousand words and so I'm going to put a picture of the instructions that came with these niffty frames, because hopefully my rambling and these pics together will be easier to understand.

And now for the finished product:

I absolutely love these art pieces and I can't believe how affordable they were. Def a DIY that looks super professional.

Fiji

One of the most fun things about going out of the states for vacation is the shopping! Of course, I love shopping any where, but last summer in Chicago I found my self shopping at Express, Crate and Barrel and Forever 21. Fun, but typical US stores. So when you're in another country, like when I honeymooned in Fiji, its such an awesome opportunity to get your hands on some one of a kind items. Here are some tips for using your souvenirs as art in your home!

#1: This obvious, but get something you LIKE and want to see a lot. I loved loved loved the pieces I got in Fiji and went against my better judgement to spend the money on them. (I also LOVED a woven mat handmade in one of the towns we visited. I don't really have a place for it right now, so I'll show it in a future post!)

#2: Be careful, just because a native is selling it doesn't mean it wasn't made in China. Make sure you know the cultural significance of your items, like I did for the masks and neck breaker.

#3: Your collage of pieces is more likely to balance if you chose a variety of sizes. I selected one large mask and balanced it with a smaller mask and a small neck breaker. My husband wanted a 4 foot neck breaker, but that was a little too varied for our small apartment!!

#4: Plan your arrangements on the floor before starting to hang them. You don't want to make any more holes in your walls than necessary, so make sure you have a plan when you start hammering! Also, balance is a visual concept so you really shouldn't need to measure too much. Maybe you want to make sure your center piece is centered, but other wise trust your eyes! That's how everyone else will be experiencing your art, so that's what matters most.

#5: Lastly, if you need to, fill in blank spaces with something you got in town, as long as it continues the vibe you have going. My three pieces left an awkward blank spot so I filled it with a vase and rocks from Target and sticks from IKEA.

Never again will you have to return with a T-shirt that you'll never wear or a made in china magnet. Find something exotic and bring a little bit of your vacation home with you!

Where are your summer plans taking you?
