Its like everything I've ever wanted to be all rolled into one. . .

Yesterday at the end of my interior design class, two of my students presented me with a special portfolio page.  I have been teaching my students how to make professional portfolio pages for five years and so its a huge representation of who I am.  To have them make me my own portfolio page to keep was so awesome!  No one has ever done that for me before!

And it was a picture of Architect Barbie!  I didn't even know they made one of those.  To say this is really special feels like a big understatement!!

And on the back of every portfolio page is a description, so here is what they wrote for this one:

 There are no words.

District House Competition

This past Tuesday my advanced interior design class competed in the Canyon's District House Competition.I had three teams, and another high school had three teams.  Here are the boards for two of my teams.  The missing boards were 2nd place (I'm guessing, I haven't officially heard) so they were taken by the builder.  I'm sad none of my teams took first place, but their designs were just too creative for a spec home.  I try and try, but you just can't stifle the creativity in my girls!!  You'll see. . .

Madison Avenue fixtures

Madison Avenue title (top two are for bathrooms, third is for kitchen back splash, last is for fireplace surrounds)

Not pictured is my third group, Autumn Wind.  I'll post those as soon as I can get them back in my possession!!

So proud of my girls and all their hard work!  They put eight weeks into these projects, visiting lots of flooring, tile and lighting stores!

Let the Fun Begin!

Today we started our first project in my Advanced Interior Design class.  I love this project.  My students have competed in this competition with FCCLA for the last three years, starting the second year of its existence (really, the first year it was different rules, and a pretty lame project).  The first year my students did very well, the second year they took first place at state (Utah) and last year they took second place at state (which I blame on me not having as much time to coach them).  Every year its the same rules, but the scenario is different.  This year they are drafting a remodel for a whole house!  They are remodeling a traditional shotgun style home.  Along with the floor plan they draw an elevation of one room and select all the finishes and furniture.  We are going to spend the next two months on this project (which, isn't as long as it sounds since I only see them 2 or 3 times a week and there's a lot of time off for holidays).  Can't wait to see how they do!

Logo!

Last December when I was preggo with Baby O, I team taught a class to interior design teachers from around Utah. Two awesome things happened that day: Fred, the construction teacher, was super nice and said all these great things about me (My students have designed two houses that Fred has built. Pictures? Unfortunately not.) The second thing was when my team teacher showed a lesson she does with her advanced class. She has them create a logo and they use that logo to label all of their assignments through out the year. And I was like, DUH. Such an awesome idea. Because I'm always looking for ways to make my class more commercial and less high school. And I actually thought, "I want to be a stay at home mom!! But I also want to teach one more year so I can have my students do this assignment!" I didn't have a choice, I had to work, so you better believe I took the chance to have my students do the logo assignment!!! I started by showing them my logo and it just reminded me how much I LOVE IT! It was designed by a friend of a friend, Caley Park. I've loved reading her blog and I'm learning so much from her! You can see my blog header, which is her design. And here are the blog button and facebook page versions, that I will use if I ever get to that point!

So we had a great time today designing logos and coming up with fun names for our design companies. My fav: Kick Ash Design (Her name is Ashlee! So cute!) When they're done, I'll post some of my favorites (with permission, of course!) I miss my girl (who had her first day at daycare and had a great time! Of course she was sleeping every time I came to check on her!) but if I have to work, this job rocks!
